4 Questions for a Successful 2021

Mar 29, 2021

How often do you check into your annual plan once you’ve written it? Monthly? Quarterly? Never?  Guess what, never is the wrong answer!

It is so important to review and assess your plan throughout the year for two reasons:

  1. To make sure that you celebrate your wins
  2. To stop yourself from drifting off track

Has 2021 lived up to expectations so far? If yes, it's time to celebrate, if not, it's time to course correct so that you can make the next 9 months AMAZING! Many of us had big hopes for 2021 after the fiasco of 2020 and in some parts of the world, life is almost normal. Here in the UK we are still in endless lockdown even though Spring is knocking on the door.

The big question you now need to ask in order to move forward with success is how has the world situation affected the goals you set in January? Are you still in lockdown? Are your kids back at school? Are you able to continue with the same hours you allocated for work, yourself and your family? Let’s take a look at the last three months with these 4 check in questions and see if you are still on track to hit those amazing goals you set in January.

Check In Question 1

What’s the Big Picture?

The first thing to do is to take a step back and look at the big picture. Specifically, ask yourself the big questions about how things have changed for you and your business in the last 3 months. Do you want to pursue the same goals you set in January? It’s ok if the answer is no. Look deep inside and see if your goals are still aligned with who you are. What no longer fits? (If you would like some help clarifying your core values, check out my FREE worksheet here, 5 Steps to Make You Happy) Have you already accomplished a big goal and are now ready to focus on something new?

For example, I did a big launch of my Path to Productivity Course at the beginning of March and it was a huge success! It was a lot of work though and my time and focus was directed on all the moving parts involved in making that work. Now that it is done, I can redirect my focus to different kind of work and personal goals. Specifically, on a personal level, I have a milestone birthday this summer and I am trying to improve my health and my weight before I hit that number! In my business, I am focusing now on creating even better content that answers the questions you really want answered most. So as the season has changed and one goal has been accomplished I am moving on to other goals. Are you doing the same?

Check In Question 2

What Are Your Wins So Far?

One of the best ways to clarify where you want to go is to look back and see what has gone well for you so far. Look at the successes you have already achieved this year and ask yourself these questions:

  • What’s gone really well in the pursuit of your goals?
  • What kind of success did you have: did it make you feel good? did you make a new connection? did you make money?
  • What activities or projects are you enjoying? Do you want to do more of them?
  • How do those successes tie into your big vision?

For example, if you ran a successful workshop this year and it went really well, could running workshops become a main goal for the next 6 months? If you had a successful workshop, could you create 3 more?

Then take a look at the flip side. If you haven’t achieved what you wanted to, why not? If you want to still pursue a goal that hasn’t worked, decide what changes you’re going to make either to the goal itself, or to your approach to it. It might be that one goal is going really well but it’s taking your attention away from something else, so how can you shift your activity and mindset for better balance?

Check In Question 3

Are You Tracking Your Progress?

Tracking your progress not only helps you adjust your plan as needed, but it allows you to find motivation by seeing how far you’ve come.

One approach is to create a visual to help you stay motivated. The framework I use in PowerSystem uses a whiteboard and sticky notes to track monthly goals as they move from “to do” to “in progress” to “completed.” For a full break down of this process, check out my blog, Monthly Planning 101. Here is an example of what my board looks like:

Physically seeing your tasks move to completion can provide a great source of motivation. It can also highlight what areas have had less progress and need some more TLC!

Check In Question 4

Have You Put Accountability In Place?

Accountability is the magic sauce to the recipe of success and the area where most of my students struggle the most. It’s hard to do things alone. Making endless decisions without a sounding board can also leave you running around in circles. When you are responsible to yourself and the success or failure of your business lies squarely on your shoulders, it can be difficult to stay on track, retain focus and finish projects or even have the bandwidth to just sit down and get started! So what do you do?

My best tip is to find an accountability buddy. If you belong to any supportive groups on Facebook or in real life, that is a great place to start looking for somebody at a similar stage in their business who has similar goals. You can then arrange for weekly catch ups to discuss wins, challenges and goals. I have an accountability buddy and find our meetings incredibly helpful to move things forward.

If you don’t know where to look, please come to my Facebook Group, Female Entrepreneurs Craving Time and Financial Freedom where I will be happy to try to match you up with an accountability buddy. We also have a weekly thread on Sundays where we share our three big goals for the next week and check in on each other to provide accountability. I want you to know that you are not alone, and I welcome you to join us! Just click here and I hope to see you there soon.

Another option is to find a coach to help you with specific issues from what to focus on first, how to create a plan of action, what kind of marketing to use to mindset challenges. My clients have often told me that one of the greatest benefits of working together is the accountability I provide along with that little gentle push to take action. If you think you might benefit from this kind of accountability, then I would like to invite you to book a complimentary Kickstart Your POWER Session.
